Who is the course aimed at?     

The course is aimed at those who are intending to work in the engineering sector or anyone interested in developing an understanding of the engineering industry and gaining practical engineering skills.

Students who complete this course can go on to undertake an engineering degree course, enter the workplace by taking up an engineering apprenticeship or go to college to undertake further practical skills based courses.

What will you learn?     

The course consists of the following units:

• Unit 1: Engineering Principals
• Unit 2: Delivery of Engineering Processes Safely as a Team
• Unit 3: Engineering Product Design and Manufacture
• Unit 41: Manufacturing Secondary Machining Processes

Through completing these units you will develop your knowledge and skills in engineering. You will learn:

• How to work within a highly skilled team
• How to use CAD/CAM/CIM
• How to operate centre lathes and milling machines
• How to create and use engineering drawings and electrical schematics to fabricate objects
• How to plan the management of Health and Safety in an engineering context
• The maintenance of industrial operations in a range of contexts
• Mechatronics and programming in an industrial context

How will you be assessed?         

Assessment is 50% internal and 50% external as follows:

• Engineering Principals                                                                                             External exam - 2 hours / 120 GLH
• Delivery of Engineering Processes Safely as a Team                                                        Internally assessed coursework / 60 GLH
• Engineering Product Design and Manufacture                                                                  Externally set and marked assignment / 120 GLH
• Manufacturing Secondary Machining Processes                                                                Internally assessed coursework / 60 GLH

• Work place experience at a local employer
• Teacher led activities in school
• The use of dedicated text books
• Working in teams to solve problems
• Develop engineering hand skills by completing practical projects
• Investigating the management of engineering projects
• Researching and solving an industry set project
• Programming manufacturing processes and robots
• Use of mechatronics in industry
