Who is the course aimed at?     

Physical education is attractive to students who:

  • Have a deep interest and enthusiasm for the subject
  • Enjoy applying sporting theory to practical situations in performance and coaching
  • Enjoy discussing contemporary sporting issues that may appear in the media
  • Are interested in careers which involve physical education, such as physio, personal trainer, sports development officer, coaching and teaching
  • Need physical education to support other subjects such as biology, mathematics, geography, psychology and business studies

How will you be assessed?         

  • Physiological Factors Affecting Performance                                                                       Written exam paper - 2 hours - 30% of A Level
  • Psychological Factors Affecting Performance                                                                 Written exam paper - 1 hour - 20% of A Level
  • Socio-cultural Issues in Physical Activity and Sport                                                                  Written exam paper - 1 hour - 20% of A Level
  • Performance in Physical Education                                                                                       Non-exam assessment - 30% of A Level

How will you learn?       

For this course learning will take place through:

  • Teacher led activities and interactive teaching introducing new material
  • Regular homework tasks to consolidate new material
  • The use of dedicated text books and revision guides
  • The use of past exam questions and mark schemes
  • Taking part in discussion and debate
  • Working in groups to solve problems and develop ideas
  • Develop analytical skills in response to live performances

Enrichment activities and independent learning?           

  • Opportunities to complete a Sports Leadership qualification (Wolfreton)
  • The Level 2 Certificate in Instructing Gym Based Exercise (Wolfreton)
  • Wednesday afternoon offers the opportunity for extra- curricular sport with an expanding list of fixtures and sports available (Wolfreton)

What or where next?    

This qualification will prepare you for the further study of physical education or sports science courses as well as other related areas; for example you could go on to study sports therapy, sport business management or physiotherapy.

You will also develop the transferable skills that are in demand by higher education and employers. Future opportunities for work in the field of sport and recreation include personal trainer, sports nutritionist, leisure centre attendant and sport development officer.
