CLASSICAL CIVILISATION (OCR)

Who is the course aimed at?     

This course has been designed to provide students with a broad, coherent and rewarding study of the literature and culture of the classical world. It offers the opportunity to study elements of the literature, visual/material culture and thought of the classical world, and acquire an understanding of their social, historical and cultural contexts.

The course would be ideal if you have an interest in literature and the ancient world - previous study of the subject is not required.

What will you learn?     

The subject will give you an experience of literature, mythology, current history, drama, philosophy, psychology and sociology all within one course.

Besides the study of major Greek and Roman authors in English translation, you will also look at concepts of myth, legend, satire and drama in addition to the political, religious and social conditions of the classical world.

You will study the following:

• Component 1: The World of the Hero - Homer’s lliad or Odyssey Virgil’s Aeneid     This is focused on the study of literature in translation.

• Component 2: Culture and the Arts - Greek Theatre                                                   This involves the study of visual and material culture.

• Component 3: Beliefs and Ideas - Love and Relationships                                        This involves the study of an area of classical thought.

How will you be assessed?         

• Component 1: The World of the Hero Written paper                                                        2 hour 20 minutes 100 marks - 40% of A Level

• Component 2: Culture and the Arts Written paper                                                           1 hour 45 minutes 75 marks - 30% of A Level

• Component 3: Beliefs and Ideas Written paper                                                                1 hour 45 minutes 75 marks - 30% of A Level

How will you learn?       

You will access the ancient world through the study of different texts and you will learn in a number of different ways:

• Teacher centred activities
• Group work
• Paired work
• Research work involving websites and DVDs
• Regular homework tasks
• Use of past examination materials and mark schemes

Enrichment activities and independent learning?           

To be successful on this course students must be prepared to carry out independent research and studies.

Students are encouraged to read independently and access materials through recommended websites.

In previous years relevant theatre visits have taken place.

What or where next?    

By completing this course you will acquire a sophisticated level of knowledge and understanding of the literature and culture of the classical world. This provides a sound basis for further study of the subject at university.

The course develops skills of critical analysis and evaluation and how to apply these; skills that are valued highly by employers. It could lead to any career.
