MEDIA PRODUCTION (BTEC National Extended Certificate Edexcel)

Who is the course aimed at?     

The course is aimed at those who are intending to work in the creative media sector or anyone interested in developing an understanding of the media industry and gaining practical media skills.

The BTEC qualifications in this specification have been developed in conjunction with the creative media sector to provide vocationally-related education and training.

The BTEC National Extended Certificate in Media Production is equivalent to one A Level.

What will you learn?     

The BTEC qualification gives you the opportunity to develop a range of skills and techniques, personal skills and attitude essential for successful performance in working life.

You will learn:

• Camera and filming skills 
• Digital editing techniques 
• Lighting techniques
• Sound recording
• Pre-production techniques
• Communication and team-working skills

You will also learn about the variety of different topics related to the media sector including practical pre-production techniques, production and post-production editing techniques.

How will you be assessed?         

You will be assessed through a mixture of internally marked digital portfolio work and externally examined units. The internally marked units will require you to build a portfolio of evidence to meet the criteria, which can include word documents, pre-production materials and film footage. The digital portfolio approach will help you to manage and organise your evidence. The externally marked units will take the form of a formal examination.

You will submit your work for each unit on final deadlines. A pass, merit or distinction grade will be awarded to your submission dependant on the level of criteria achieved in your work.

• Pass = A Level Grade E - describe (what)
• Merit =  A Level Grade C - explain (how)
• Distinction = A Level Grade A - justify/evaluate (why)

How will you learn?       

The course gives you the opportunity to develop skills, knowledge and understanding relevant to the media industries in applied, practical and academic learning contexts.

You will develop practical skills through ‘hands on’ production tasks, while researching relevant topic areas and applying theory to develop your practice.

You will work individually, in pairs and in groups to complete the different units, which will require planning, analytical and practical media skills.

Enrichment activities and independent learning?           

In addition to you course studies we offer a range of opportunities to develop your media skills through projects with real clients to enhance your portfolio.

We actively encourage you to take part in competition work through student film competitions. We have an exceedingly good track record of winning national competitions.

What or where next?    

You could progress to university or gain employment. Careers could include film director, camera operator and producer.
