Who is the course aimed at?     

Health and social care is attractive to students who:

• Have an interest in working in the care sector, eg; nursing, social work, early years teaching
• Are studying social science subjects e.g. psychology/sociology
• Are doing BTEC sports who would like a career in physiotherapy or sport rehabilitation

The BTEC National Extended Certificate in Health and Social Care is equivalent to one A Level.

What will you learn?     

• Human Lifespan Development                                                                                           Covers physical, intellectual, emotional and social development across the human lifespan,  and the factors affecting development and the effects of ageing.
• Working in Health and Social Care                                                                                Explores what it is like to work in the health and social care sector, including the roles and responsibilities of workers and organisations.
• Meeting Individual Care and Support Needs                                                         Focuses on the principles and practicalities that underpin meeting individuals’ care and support needs, which are the foundation of all the care disciplines.
• Psychological Perspectives                                                                                             Explores key theoretical perspectives that have been put forward on psychological and physical development and how they are applied in different health and social care settings.

How will you be assessed?         

Assessment is 58% external and 42% internal as follows:

• Human Lifespan Development                                                                                         Written exam - 1.5 hours / 90 marks (external)
• Working in Health and Social Care                                                                                     Written exam - 1.5 hours / 80 marks (external)
• Meeting Individual Care and Support Needs                                                         Assignment / coursework (internal)
• Psychological Perspectives                                                                                         Assignment / coursework (internal)

How will you learn?       

• Teacher led activities and interactive teaching introducing new material
• Regular homework tasks to consolidate new material
• Taking part in debate and discussion
• Working in groups to solve problems and develop ideas
• Independent research
• The use of dedicated text books

Enrichment activities and independent learning?           

Students will be expected to arrange their own relevant work experience placement. This takes place in the summer term of Year 12 for one week.

Placement locations could include:

• Primary schools
• Day nurseries
• Residential care homes
• NHS

There may be opportunities to gain additional qualifications in first aid, safeguarding and British Sign Language.
