Who is the course aimed at?     

History is attractive and popular to students who:

• Have an interest and enthusiasm for the subject
• Want to develop key skills that are required for many professions - analysis, communication and evaluation
• Need history to support other courses such as English, politics, geography etc

What will you learn?     

Unit 1 - The Tudors: England 1485 - 1603

• Consolidation of the Tudor Dynasty 1485 - 1547: Henry VIII / Henry VIII - Reformation, foreign policy and domestic reform, Henry’s government and court

• Turmoil and Triumph 1547 - 1603: Edward VI - minority government, religious changes / Mary I - religious changes / Elizabeth I - court and government, Catholic plots, state of Church by 1603

Unit 2 - Democracy and Nazism: Germany 1918 - 1945

• The Weimar Republic 1918 - 1933: The establishment and early years of Weimar 1918 - 1924 / The ‘Golden Age’ of the Weimar Republic 1924 - 1928 / The collapse of Democracy 1928 - 1933

• Nazi Germany 1933 - 1945: The Nazi Dictatorship 1933 - 1939 / The Racial Sate 1933 - 1941 / The Impact of War 1933 - 1945

Unit 3 - Historical Investigation Coursework

Students will undertake a 3000 - 3500 piece of work

How will you learn?       

For each section of the course there will be a text book recommended by the examination board. You will receive other texts to read as we go through the course and these will be supplemented by documentaries and other articles written by topic specialists.

There are numerous video clips that will be used as well as a number of films. These will be analysed and evaluated for their worth.

There will also be the opportunity to engage in personal research using computers as well as presenting your findings to the rest of the group.

Enrichment activities and independent learning?           

You will be expected to work more independently and take responsibility for your own learning. This will require you to research issues, form your own opinions and develop a much wider vocabulary. You will be expected to take part in discussions, make presentations to the rest of the group and prepare for lessons.

How will you be assessed?

Unit 1 - The Tudors: England 1485 - 1603

Written exam - 2 hour 30 minutes

One source based question and two essay based questions 40% of A Level

Unit 2 - Democracy and Nazism: Germany 1918 - 1945

Written exam - 2 hour 30 minutes

One source based question and two essay based questions 40% of A Level

Unit 3 - Historical Investigation Coursework

3000 - 3500 words 20% of A Level

What or where next?    

There are many careers that look upon an A Level qualification in history as desirable including law, tourism, public administration and the police amongst others.

Future opportunities to complete a degree course at university include areas such as geography, law, accountancy, media, politics and of course history itself.
